Chief Learning Officer, commonly known as CLO is the highest ranking corporate officer handling learning managements of a corporation or an agency or concerning talent. Generally, CLOs are experts in personal training in a corporate with highest degrees in instructional design, education or in business. CLOs are required to be efficient in corporate strategy and support the development of people with the overall business goals of the organization. CLOs hence are required to have a full complement of skills and credentials, starting from business analytics, learning theories, technology, performance consulting to scientific inquiry and more. Highly qualified CLOs of corporations are hence should have leadership skills and be able to clearly handle the training management of the company. There are certain things to perform and attain to get this high credential and reach such an elite position: Chief Learning Officer should be able to create mission and a vision for training These are certain stepping stones to articulating and clarifying the needs of training, development and training initiatives exist and are significant within the organizations. These learned tools are something that aspire the training enterprise to be in years and attain the true purpose of the training. CLOs are required to align endeavors with strategic imperatives of the organization In order to grow in this domain, a CLO is required to connect every training endeavor that one create, implement or facilitate to the primary and most immediate business goal of the organization. CLO is required to create a strong alliance of customers (internal) Being a Chief Learning Officer you are required to increase awareness, support and involvement at every level of employees of the organization, starting from juniors, senior executives and mid-managers to supervisors all. A credible CLO needs to have a thorough knowledge of their likes and dislikes. As a learning and development professional these are your customers. Make it a point to know their likes and dislikes, and be flexible enough to adequately develop your programs and workshops around what is important to helping them reach their business goals. Stop expecting that the Human Resource Director to plan ones career, being a CLO A learned CLO needs to be self motivated and self sufficient. A CLO is a visionary thinker who proactively stays ahead of the organization. A CLO always looks to the future to determine not only what the organization needs to grow and be more effective, but also looks at their own professional gaps and seeking ways to close them. Complete knowledge about the Operational Aspect of Your Organization One needs to be on the heels and ready to venture into the operational area of your work environment. Ones ideas quickly become obsolete if not constantly improved upon. Especially, when you are a CLO you need to get out from behind your desk and get involved in what’s going on in the organization.
