Chances are that if you are thinking of becoming a vegetarian, there are a couple of driving factors that are working in your mind. They are: • You are keen to reap the multiple health benefits of vegetarianism including weight lossrn• You are motivated by the immense flexibility of choices that vegetarianism offersrn• You want to voice your concern against animal slaughter and want to contribute towards preservation of animal life and the environment. Whatever the motivating factor is, before you to decide on becoming a vegetarian, keep in mind that changing food habits and even lifestyle calls for immense determination and focus. After all, for those of us, who have been raised in an all-meat diet environment, suddenly giving up animal foods could be mentally and physically upsetting. Your motivation to turn vegetarian also has to have the support of your beliefs and down the line, you need to be prepared to alter some of your values, especially, if you decide to opt for a stricter form of vegetarianism by becoming vegan. Becoming a vegetarian: what it means when you decide on becoming vegan Veganism entails not just giving up on meat, fish and eggs but also saying no to all items that are made from animal resources like honey, fur, silk, wool and leather. As far as vegan nutrition is concerned becoming vegan would also mean taking additional B12 and amino acid supplements, as your diet may be deficient in these nutrients. Becoming a vegetarian: how about the raw food lifestyle As mentioned, one of the key drivers for people to opt for vegetarianism is not just the health benefits of vegetarianism, but also the flexibility it allows. For example, those of us who want a lifestyle that lays equal emphasis on maintaining proper mental health, along with physical well-being, usually opt for the raw food lifestyle. Over and above eating raw, this lifestyle also involves participating in a host of activities that nurture mental health. You might also have to change your viewpoint regarding how you want to take care of your health – and switchover to a holistic overview about the same; you no longer treat the symptoms of a disease but go deeper and treat the root cause. For mental health upkeep, you keep a close circle of friends; spend quality time in natural surroundings; say no to alcohol and other stimulants; pursue a creative hobby and do activities that keep your mind at peace. Becoming a vegetarian: think health At the end of the day, no matter why you decide to change your food habits along with lifestyle, you have to make sure that you remain healthy and fit with the diet you have. Your calorie needs must be met, no matter what your personal preferences are. For the best guidance in matters of calorie needs and vegetarian nutrition, you could rely on the vegetarian food pyramid or the vegan food pyramid – and learn more about what to have and in what quantities. If becoming a vegetarian means choosing the raw food lifestyle, there is plenty to learn about raw food diet. For example, you are not allowed to cook foods beyond 116 degrees F but are allowed to dehydrate, soak or juice the foods. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains are going to be your staple diet. Be that as it may, there are also health concerns about such raw food diet that you would want to know more about, before finally deciding on this category of vegetarianism.
