Being A Kid

Yesterday as I was watching my kids play after school in the play yard I was thinking. As a professional fitness trainer and nutritionist I’m looking at the kids posture, shape and gate as they move and play. OK, why was I doing this? I’m wondering where it is in life we start to move less, our bodies and posture change.

These kids were anywhere from 6 to 10 all elementary kids in good physical condition. Only one child looked like she could be on the road to weight issues. All had excellent posture and movement. They were running, crawling, climbing and jumping it looked like such fun, why do we stop doing these things?

Most my clients are from their mid fifties to mid seventies. When they start working with a trainer usually its because something hurts, they need to trim down or their doctor says they have a health issue that will become more serious if they don’t get to moving around.

To be honest if you spend just 10 to 20 minutes everyday doing some activity that requires you to exert yourself to a fatigued state and then relax and recover you are doing your body great justice. Strength training works this way as you do a set with the weight you achieve your maximum repetitions, then rest for 30 second or 1 minute then back to the next set of repetitions, right? Why not do your cardiovascular activities the same way? Walking then walking faster or running if your body is able, swimming laps in the pool, walking up and down hills, riding your bike at a slow pace then really busting it out until you fatigue is so effective and gives you a great rush. Oh! Guess what, you don’t have to do it for an hour everyday just 10 to 20 minutes. We all have time for that right? If you said no then you need to look at your priorities. If your not healthy you can’t take care of the people who need you.

So get moving, act like a kid and feel great. If your knees hurt, back hurts, neck hurts or anything else look at your posture. Make sure and stretch and strengthen the right areas to correct any posture or imbalances in your body. Work with a professional, its their job to help you, just like you have a job you specialize in to help people. From my own experience I’ve had knee problems in the past and was not able to run without pain. After learning more, studying and taking classes on posture I was able to correct my hip weakness with simple exercise in a very short amount of time. Now I can run run run and it feels great.

Be good to your body, feed it the best quality of whole foods you can and get moving make a difference in your life and in the lives of people who love you. Its not too late to capture health in your life we all deserve the best every single day.

Much Love and Peace….

Katy was born in the small town of Greenville Missouri. She attended college for finance but always had a need to help people and wasn’t interested in becoming nurse or doctor “I want to help people before they get sick”. This need was filled when in the early 90's she became an international fitness competitor at the Ms. Galaxy competition, where she was featured in Muscle Media 2000 jumping a hurdle. "This was an amazing feeling being with these woman whose age ranged from 18 to 40+. I decided then after meeting women in their 40's with 4 kids that was what I would do with myself and help other people learn to do for themselves". At this show she decided fitness would become her life and began the quest for health and fitness. Working with the IFPA on her certification was the first step. Now Katy is on of the top fitness professional is the Redondo Beach area. She trains clients out of the Spectrum Club in Redondo Beach as well as counseling in meal planning and nutrition. "In the next month I will start a program where we create healthy snacks and meals as well as learn about whole foods." In 2006 Katy wrote a training manual and produced a DVD on Low Level Laser Therapy for smoking cessation and weight management. This has helped doctors, nurses, hypnotherapist and others interested in helping people with these addictions. The concept is based on acupuncture and auricular therapy using the healing power of the low level laser to stimulate the points. “My boyfriend Jeff was a trooper and helped me get this project done. We worked with coldlasertherapy.us to teach people how to safely use the laser and help thousands of people with their addictions.” When she looks at the people she works with she feels so blessed with her life, family and friends. “I want every person I meet to love their lives as much as I love mine.”nn

Movement is one of the most honest forms of self-connection. The body never lies. It holds stress, records emotion, and reveals when something feels off. For many, this is why exercise has always been more than fitness; it’s therapy through motion. But not all movement heals. Some styles exhaust, others distract. True healing often begins in the slow, intentional kind, the kind that lets the body lead and the mind follow.rnThat’s where precision-based training, such as re
