Being Different in Banner Design

Will be different good? This is the question many people don't ask, they just assume being different is nice, when really being different can mean getting less effective. One time i worked in newspapers, and there were some ‘clever’ promoters there who wanted their adverts inverted, as they considered it would be various and ‘different is good’ right? Completely wrong! We ran tests, and the months we had their own advert upside down, they were given less response, why? Simple, people did not like it, these people didn’t like the fact the advert could not comply, they could not like the truth they had to turn the paper inverted purely to read an advert that was selling to them. Invert block is another typical ‘being different’ point, but again, it doesn’t always function. We are raised in the Western world reading dark print on mild background, and also reading top right to bottom left. Deviating coming from that needs sound thought, and if achievable, testing. A good advertising designer will know whether or not something will perform, and will help you as such, he or she/she will have seen it all before many times, and also the last thing they will want is to produce a banner for someone in which is not going to work for them. What they want is always to produce something that functions, that way they get your replicate business. So while sometimes being different is ok, other times not so. The true magic, is knowing when you should be different and when to conform. Ask your designer, they may be there to help you with successful design, ask them and also listen to the actual why!
