Being greener – going electrical

Even in times of economic uncertainty and when most people are feeling the pinch, being environmentally savvy about your mode of transport is important for many people. However being environmentally friendly does not necessarily mean ditching the car to sweat it out on public transport. For many being greener means switching to a smaller more fuel efficient car, for others it means going electrical and for some it means both. There was a time when electrical cars was neither fashionable nor practical with their enormous batteries, long recharging times, and limited driving range. And the prospect of driving an electric car from let’s say London to Brighton would have been a daunting one with few or no recharging points and a range of only a few miles. You could probably cycle the route and get there faster. The modern day electrical car however, has a much longer range and with more and more recharging stations being installed all over the country, the thought of buying an electric car sounds a lot less scary than it used to. However, unless you’re a city dweller, an electrical car is not really a viable option as the hassle of recharging would still make longer journeys rather unpractical. But for city dwellers there is one new electrical option on the market, the Smart car. Already an easy identifiable part of city traffic, the nippy car now has an electrical version, the Smart Fortwo Ed. It is equipped with lithium-ion batteries which can last up to 20 miles with a top speed of 84 mph. So maybe electrical is what you should consider when buying a new smart Brighton to London in an electrical car no longer sounds that daunting.
