rnDon’t have a lot of gardening experience? No problem! Remember that every gardener was once a beginner. If you’re ready to transform your empty garden into a lush paradise, there are few things you can do to help. Before you know it, you’ll have the greenest thumb in the neighbourhood. Know Where to Shop You can’t have a successful garden if you don’t have the right equipment. Many new gardeners make the mistake of buying the most expensive tools. This is not a good investment. While it’s true that some tools are better than others, you can make do with mid-range equipment when you’re first getting started. Consider saving money by shopping at a local supermarket. You may not know this, but most supermarkets carry a wide selection of gardening tools. Best of all, the prices are better, and the quality is good. If you’re looking for something that’s more specialised, you’ll need to head to a DIY store or a gardening centre. These stores also have a knowledgeable staff to help you make the right purchase. Always Compost and Fertilize When you’re hungry, you eat. You probably feel better when you eat something that’s good for you. The same is true for your garden. You don’t want your plants to suffer if the soil isn’t chocked full of nutrients. That’s why it’s always smart to stay on top of composting and fertilising your crops. Compost makes a great fertiliser, and it’s always completely organic. Start a compost bin, and in a short time, you’ll have the perfect organic matter for your crops. Combine it with your potting mix or add it to your soil. Your crops will thank you later with a tremendous yield. Say Goodbye to Weeds with Mulch Many new gardeners confuse fertilizer with mulch, but they serve different purposed. Mulch should be spread around and between your plants to form a protective barrier. During the colder months, mulch keeps plants warm. All year long, mulch also locks in moisture, so your crops won’t dry out. Best of all, mulch prohibits weeds from growing in your garden. The best mulches are made from bark, wood chips, or straw. You may find some of your crops prefer one type of mulch over another. For example, many gardeners find straw works perfectly in their vegetable gardens. Share with Others The best gardens are the ones that you get to share with others. If you’re growing flowers, consider taking a few blooms to your friends or neighbours. You can even take them to a senior centre. If you can’t eat all the tomatoes you’ve grown, don’t let them go to waste. Share them with everyone you know. Find someone who is in need. Fellow gardeners may enjoy your extra seeds. Best of all, when you share with other garden enthusiasts, they’re sure to repay the favour. Be Attentive Gardening does require some work on your side. You can’t just plant some seeds and walk away. Instead, make sure you spend enough time enjoying your garden. Some people even believe that talking to your plants will help them thrive. Seek advice and find a tradesman in your locality if needing an extra hand. The more time you spend in your garden, the better it will grow.
