Best Techniques for Packing Boxes
Packing boxes is a form of art. After all, it is important to have the right amount of packing materials in order to keep the items inside safe, as well as keep the boxes organized so that you are able to easily and quickly find the items that are stowed away inside. There are several tips and techniques that one can follow to ensure that they are packing boxes in the best way possible. It's important to first evaluate all of the items that you will be packing and determine how many boxes and what sizes you should get. Packing boxes smartly can save you a lot of work later, and it begins with the proper box size. For instance, you don't want to pack heavy items -- such as books or movies -- in large boxes because it will be impossible to carry them. If you have large boxes, use these to pack towels, pillows, sheets or comforters. Small boxes should be reserved for heavier items and extreme breakables, such as drinking glasses or glass home decor items. Midsize boxes are fine for everything in between and if packed appropriately, can be effective for plates and other kitchen items. Once you have determined the size of your boxes, start to organize the things you will be packing into boxes. Start packing the items that you know you won't need in the near future, such as books and movies. Make sure you label the boxes appropriately so that you remember what is in the boxes. If you write "stuff," you will most likely forget what you packed in there. But, if you label the box as "stuff that sits on bookshelf in living room," you'll have a better idea of what it is. It doesn't hurt to list out a few bullet points, such as "Movies, Titles A-F" or "Decorations, winter holidays, living room." You will thank yourself later for having the extra detail. Kitchen items, such as plates, should be carefully packed. Try to layer the plates where you have a protective layer in between each plate. The most effective protective layer is bubble wrap, but you can also use cloth, such as towels or sheets. Use newspaper or other paper as a filler so the plates don't move around in transport. In addition, pots, pans and other dishes should be wrapped in newspaper to add a protective layer. Glasses are a bit more tricky. You can use the pre-made boxes that many shipping supply stores sell that have dividers for the glasses. However, while this prevents against them clinking against each other and possibly breaking, it doesn't prevent against them breaking from being drop or shifting during transport. Therefore, also try to wrap these in bubble wrap, or at least newspaper, so they have some sort of a protective shell. It is possible to pack clothing into boxes as well. Medium boxes are great sizes, as large boxes may get heavy if too many articles of clothing are packed. Depending how many clothes you have, try to separate out based on type such as sweatshirts, jeans, t-shirts and pajamas. It will make unpacking much easier. To save boxes, you may want to consider packing your clothing into suitcases that you already have. This will make it even easier to identify where your clothes are packed. As one can see, packing boxes can be difficult and frustrating. However, it is important to have patience and be extra careful because it can make a world of difference during transport in keeping your items safe and secure. The more effort you put into it at the beginning means that the phase of unpacking will be much easier.
