What causes acne? Acne is a serious, sensitive skin condition that can affect almost anyone at any age. Its main causes are clogged hair follicles due to excess oil production or excess deposition of dead cells that leads to blocking of the pores. These deposits are good foods for bacteria, and this further aggravates acne condition by providing a conducive place for bacteria multiplication. Its main signs and symptoms include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, nodules, and cystic lesions. These acne conditions are not mostly permanent, and they heal on their own although sometimes medical treatment is required. An acne scar is a discoloration that forms at the point where there was a skin injury or the acne. It is a reminder of the infection, and in most cases, they are not painful. Many people are conce ed with acne scars for aesthetic reasons only. How severe are acne scars In most cases; acne patients will recover from the condition without serious scarring. However, where the condition is severe, there are very high chances of scarring. Many acne treatment methods address scarring. The level of scarring depends on the type of acne, and this affects the treatment method to apply. Best treatment for acne scars The best acne scar treatment method depends on the type of scar and skin type of the patient. As such what works best for a particular person might not work best for the other. The best option is to get professional advice from a dermatologist on which is the best method to follow to get rid of acne scars. Some of the available treatment methods are: Skin lightening creams: Most acne scars will lead to loss of color or darkening of the skin. A lightening cream is ideal for clearing the dark pigment that forms at the surface of the skin. They are ideal for raised scars. Most of these Gels contai Hydroquinone as well as other skin brightening agents like Kojic acids, Resorcinol, Azelaic acid and many more. There is no downtime or extreme risk associated with this treatment method. Laser treatments: The use of lasers to treat acne scars is one of the best methods in the market today. They work by breaking down and destroying selected tissues on the skin. The process is commonly known as Photothermolysis. Other lasers like the carbon dioxide lasers can also be used to remove the scars that have grown above the surface of the skin. The main disadvantage of using lasers for acne treatment is the associated cost. Chemical peels: These are skin resurfacing methods that are used to enhance the physical appearance of a person. In essence, they peel off the top layer of the skin and uncover the smoother and healthier underlying layer beneath. These peels can either be based on the following acidic components: Glycolic, Trichloroacetic, phenol, and Salicylic. The choice of which base agent to use is determined by the skin condition and type of skin. Micro-dermabrasion: Just like the chemical peel this is a skin resurfacing method that aims to get rid of the topmost rough layer of the skin through exfoliation. A diamond wad or crystals are used; the removal of the uppermost layers of the skin, as well as the micro-injuries inflicted on the skin, causes the skin to produce new collagen and help in correcting and discoloration on the skin. Bellafill: It is a dermal filler injection that works by replacing volume lost by scarring. It restores the normal outlook of the skin by working on either the depressed or raised sections of the skin. It is an FDA approved dermal filler treatment for acne scar that has five-year safety data. For effective treatment, two to three sessions are required spaced at least 4-6 weeks apart. Wrap up The above-mentioned treatment methods are not the only ones available. Other treatment methods available in the market today are Subcision, excision and Micro Needling.
