Better Than This

When I was growing up and watching TV, I remember the ending to a certain beer commercial (there used to be a lot more of them). I don’t even remember the name of the beer the was being promoted though I do remember the last line of it--”It doesn’t get any better than this!”.
As we have now finished with the Thanksgiving Weekend and turn our attention toward the Christmas Holiday and the Year’s end, among the rush and the stress, there will be certain amount of time that we will reflect on the past and the future. The questions that may arise may be “How did we survive this past year?’ or “How are we going to get through this next year?”. We may or may not ask these out loud, yet in the back of our mind, we’re going to wonder “Does it get any better than this?”.
Most of us go through our days with a certain routine and try as much as possible to stay within our comfort zone. We may reluctantly adapt to small changes and overcome small problems that arise. Yet when something bigger happens that requires more than a
“2 second fix”, stress levels rise, our thinking becomes less clear, and a little panic may set in as we go “Now What!” to try to overcome the problem with as little pain as possible. This results in a lot of half-hearted efforts or passing the back. Just watch the news to see whose “blaming” who for any problem imaginable. “Does it get any better than this?”
One of the Laws of Nature is “You are either growing or you’re dying”. Which you choose to do is your decision and your responsibility—and therein lies the problem. More and more people are shying away from taking responsibility and blaming the next guy, gal, corporation, or whatever. President Harry Truman’s famous sign “The Buck Stops Here” is fading into distance as too look for someone else to blame for where their circumstances today. Too many are worrying about being a victim instead of becoming a ‘victor’. “Does it get any better than this?”.
Instead of worrying, you need to become a decision-maker. Decide to become ‘a victor’ instead of ‘a victim’. Decide to grow in you intellectual, emotional, and financial lives. Decide to take control of your overall life and allow yourself to dream and explore and expect new and great things to come into your life. When you decide to take control of yourself, then everyday becomes a miracle. Decide not to give up your power to make things happen. DREAM, THEN DO! “It CAN get better than this!”
