If the eyes are the window to the soul, perhaps the liver is the window to your eyes. The liver is a vital organ and is necessary for healthy functioning throughout your body and this includes your eyes! If your liver isn’t healthy, your eyes probably aren’t either.

In this post, we’ll go over what your liver does, how your liver’s health can affect your eye health and what you can do to get your liver in tip-top shape. Having a healthy liver improves eyesight for some folks so it’s important to take your liver seriously!

It’s important for our livers to be as healthy as possible; the liver is one very hard working and multi-faceted organ. Our livers are responsible for everything from making bile to storing vitamins.

One of the main functions the liver performs is manufacturing important blood-clotting and anti-swelling proteins for our body to use. The liver makes bile to help our bodies remove and process food, toxins, bilirubin and cholesterol.

People who are yellow in color may be jaundiced, which means they have too much bilirubin in their bodies. Our livers help our bodies to detoxify and get rid of unwanted substances. Finally, the liver is responsible for storing extra fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and K.

A healthy liver improves eyesight in many ways. It’s been said that diseases of the eye can be directly linked to imbalances of the liver. It’s no surprise then that when a person is suffering from jaundice of the liver, their eyes as well as their skin will appear to be yellow in color.

If your body isn’t producing enough bile to remove toxins, your eyes will most likely look unhealthy, cloudy and possibly yellow (because your liver isn’t able to remove the bilirubin). If your liver isn’t producing those important anti-swelling proteins your body needs, your eyes may appear puffy.

If your liver isn’t removing enough cholesterol for you it’s possible that you’ll end up with cholesterol deposits under the skin around your eyes. When your liver isn’t healthy, your eyes often don’t appear healthy either.

There are some things you can do to safeguard both the health of your eyes and your liver. Avoid, as much as possible, substances that make your liver work harder; alcohol, fried foods and drugs are all things you should avoid. Think before you reach for a shaker of salt as too much of it is a no-no for your liver’s health.

Consider alte atives seasonings such as cinnamon, parsley and vinegar. Go green; eat lots of healthy green vegetables such as kale, collard greens, spinach and broccoli. Work on keeping your weight under wraps so that you don’t overload your liver.

Don’t take too many fat-soluble vitamins that your liver has trouble storing all of them! Be aware of how much your liver does for you and treat it well by nourishing it with foods that keep it in good shape and stop giving it foods and substances that make it work harder.

Remember that many people believe a healthy liver improves eyesight and to respect your liver if you want your eyes to reap the benefits!
