This national park is a marshy area sprawled over an area of 29 sq km. The presence of kadam forests, grasslands and shallow lakes make it an ideal destination which cradles some of the exotic and rarest bird species. This park was built by the Maharaja of Bharatpur in the 19th century as the bird shooting reserve. Also known as the Keoladeo National Park, this park became a bird sanctuary in 1956 and was declared a national park in 1982. The foremost attraction of this national park is 350 species of birds and 35 species of butterflies which makes it a paradise for bird lovers and most favoured destination among Ornithologists. The exotic collection of the bird species make this park a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the famous birds species of this park are endangered Siberian cranes, pink tinted painted stork, egrets,ducks,pelicans, cormorants, ibises, geese, black-necked, painted and Asian open-bill storks. Bharatpur Palace and Government Museum It is another popular attraction of this place famous for its rich collection of artefacts dating back to the era of raja-maharaja. This beautiful palace is famous for its architectural design based on the Mughal and Rajput styles. Some portion of this palace has been converted into a government museum which exhibits rich collection of antiques like wood articles, stone vessels, ornaments, hunted cubs, bear kids, tigers and deer, dresses, jewellery boxes, sculptures and ancient inscriptions. Lohagarh Fort It is a magnificent fort renowned for its impregnable defence system because of which it was named Lohagarh. The design, decoration and construction of this fort are the living testimony to the glorious era of the audacious Jat rulers. This grand fort was built by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal in the 18th century. Kothi Khas, Mahal Khas, Kishori Mahal and Moti Mahal are the popular attractions of this fort which enthral tourists with their grandiose decorations. The Ashtadhatu (eight-metal) gateway with huge elephants paintings is the most striking feature of this fort.
