Most of our schools have for a long time been serving unhealthy foods to our children. This has been one of the reasons for the prevalence of childhood obesity. There have been a number of efforts by different individuals and organisations to try and change this and stop obesity right in its tracks, but only a few seem to be winning the battle. Parents and schools have got to get into an agreement of some sort. Naturally, both the parents and the schools have the children's best interests at heart, or at lest they should. They both want the best and success for the children. So when it comes to eating healthy, the two can come into a collaboration. There's no point for a school to start on a healthy eating program and introduce healthy foods to children whilst at home things haven't changed. The reverse of this is also true. This can be damaging to a child as conflicting messages will be sent to them. The first meal of the day is of absolute importance. Eating a healthy breakfast for children should be a priority for both schools and parents. Breakfast is the first meal of the day and needs to set children up for the day. Giving them the energy they need for it. Research has proven that skipping breakfast or eating an unhealthy one can be disastrous to kids. One of the results showed that their performace in school and alertness will be greatly compromised on, amongst other things. Examples of things to be served at breakfast include whole grain cereals, fruits, whole grain muffins, eggs, low-fat yogurt, etc. Lunch and dinner are equally important. Because children are still developing, they need to be given the right kind of foods that will give them the minerals, vitamins and nutrients that their bodies need to develop in a healthy manner. The food pyramid diagram is one tool that both schools and parents can use to create a healthy eating program for children. It shows just how much of the foods from each food group we're recommended to eat. Examples of foods to serve for the rest of the day include brown rice, potatoes, lean meat, chicken, whole wheat pasta, lots of water, fruits and vegetables, low-fat milk, whole wheat crackers, the list is endless. Creativity matters. Children will be attracted more to foods that are appealing to the eyes first. It's important to educate the children about eating healthy. Instead of being forced to eat their vegetables, they'll know and understand why they have to do it. So what are the advantages of instilling healthy eating habits into the children? First of all, it will mean a healthier nation in the future as the children will grow up into it. This will mean that the nation's health bill will also drastically go down, as most of the health issues of today are mostly due to bad eating habits. For instance, obesity in children can lead to pediatric hypertension. Obesity, in most cases is caused by unhealthy eating habits. Therefore, when children eat healthy, cases of childhood obesity and its risk factors will also go down. From schools that have embarked on this journey, there have been pleasing results. Parents are amazed at the way their children are excited about eating well. This has even brought a change into their own homes, in terms of what foods they buy more. Some have cited that though the monthly food bill has gone up, it is a better price to pay than having overweight or obese children, as these will have expenses of their own. In conclusion, when parents and schools team up into instilling healthy eating patterns into the children, moreso right from kindergarten, greater rewards will be reaped.
