To develop your boxing skills you need to not only persevere but also know the right technique of boxing. All you require is a mirror. Stand right in front of the mirror with your toes outwards, let your arms hang loose and place both of your feet a good 12 – 16 inches apart. Keep your spine fixed as though you have some kind of steel rod running down your spine. It will form your axis straight from the spine to the floor. All you require to do now is to rotate along this axis of yours. This posture allows free movement of your arms. Develop a swinging motion of your arms and keep practicing at it till you have a permanent stand of this sort. One very important part is to keep the body stiff and not to let it sway.
Now the next step involves you lifting your arms up to your sides. They should be bowed at the elbows. Ensure that your hands are facing upwards. Now carry on to turn. Make sure that the elbows are put in and are touching the side of your body. As your body is turning start straightening your arms out in front of you. Reach out completely and put your right hand in front with your arm completely outstretched. Make the palm face up. If it helps then imagine that you are begging for a coin. Make sure that the elbows are tucked inside. At this moment your hand should go towards the mirror in a straight line. When you have achieved this then clench your fist and repeat the movement. The twist that your body gets is what propels the power in the punch. Therefore it is very vital that you put in a good twist for the punch.
There are two basics that you must know about boxing- Forming the guard and the duck.
• Forming the guardr
Go back to your attack position. Keep your feet 12 -16 inches apart with toes towards the mirror. Ensure that the feet are parallel to each other and now copy the breast stroke, the same one as that in swimming. Put your hands beside your chin and then throw them out before you let them fall down in a sweeping motion besides you. Make sure that the hands are making a stroke above your head. Take your left foot forward and your right foot backward. Continue with the breast stroke pretending that you are swimming. Now instead of throwing your arms outward bring them forward and keep elbows close to your body.
• The Duckr
Adapt previous position. Keep your feet 12 -16 inches apart with toes towards the mirror. Ensure that the feet are parallel to each other, Put your chin against your right collar bone and ensure that you don’t end up showing too much of the ear. Always keep the chin down and observe yourself in the mirror.
