Jay Shetty is a 7-year-old boy from London and was born with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy (CP), is a muscle disorder caused by brain damage, possibly during birth. The disorder impacts the part of the brain responsible for controlling muscles.

In Jay’s case, he suffered a collapsed lung during birth. This resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain, known as Asphyxia. This brain injury lead to the development of CP. This left Jay unable to sit-up straight, walk, or even feed himself.

Jay has suffered quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which impairs all four limbs. Doctors also believe he may be blind, which is caused by the lack of muscle control in his eyes. After 7 years of taking care of the demanding disorder, the parents, Shilpa and Raj, are trying an experimental treatment involving stem cell research. The treatment is called cord blood banking and it will not be cheap. Over the past 7 years, they have already put in £100,000 into taking care of Jay.
Cord blood banking involves taking blood from the preserved umbilical cord from birth and using it in stem cell therapies. Typically, the umbilical cord needs to be from the same individual. However, there has been recent research on the use of a sibling’s umbilical cord. Jay has a 2-and-a-half-year-old brother, Kairus. Whom they have decided to prep for operation.

While the family is British, they are traveling to the US because the treatment is not supported in London. In North Carolina, Duke University is offering trials and Jay Shetty is on the list. This will give hope to the family, but the strain financially will cause long-term effects.
