Awareness about any disease is in fact a weapon that can be very helpful in not only preventing that disease but also in fighting against it if it attacks you. Breast cancer is a disease most frequently found among women. This cancer is a lethal disease and can be life threatening if detected at later stages. It is suggested to women belonging to any age group above twenty to examine their breasts in routine.
Examination of breasts is a very authentic way of catching any abnormality earlier. Most of the time women ignore this very sensitive part of their body and this ignorance results in serious repercussions. Your regularity in self breast exam although does not prevent you from this cancer, but can be an efficient way of detecting this cancer at the stage where it is not harmful for you.
Before starting your exam you should be very relaxed and happy indeed that you are going to know about your own body part and the most important one. First undress your chest area and then start with looking at the contour and texture of your chest. Be careful while performing this exam because it is a way to keeping in mind the exact skin color, shape and size of your breasts. When you get familiar with normal it is not a big deal to point out any abnormality.
Raise your arms above your head and keep a deep eye contact with your chest so that you may understand well the shape of your breasts. Look at the size and be confirmed about their comparative size that there is not much difference. It is normal according to experts to have a negligible difference in size because many women have one breast slightly larger than the other. If it is there in your breasts then don’t be worried but however if you find a very evident variation among their size then it is important for you to consult it with a physician because it is most preferably an alarming sign of breast cancer.
After completion of look move your attention toward your nipples and squeeze them to find if there is any release of some fluid. Fluid coming out of nipples is not a normal thing. If you are engaged in breastfeeding then you will find milk coming out of nipples but other than milk any fluid discharge is disturbing.
Lie down when you have completely satisfied yourself about normal look of your whole chest area. Start with your left breast and feel it with right hand fingers. Massaging your left breast feel if there is a part that seems thick or like a mass on feeling. As you have completely felt your left portion including armpit feel your right part of chest in the same way as you did with left one.
It is inevitable for women in current era to remain ignorant about breast cancer. This cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that is not only common among women but it is a lethal type of cancer. It is very satisfactory to hear that this cancer is curable. But condition associated with curability of this cancer is that it should be detected at earlier stages.
Your adequate caution to detect this cancer earlier includes not only your familiarity with your own chest area but it also requires you to be well known with all available breast screening tests. If you find any abnormal change it is your responsibility to consult tools available for breast exam so that this cancer can be detected at earlier stages where it is not only curable but there are increased survival chances.
