There are many issues and concerns for women who have breast cancer. First and foremost, of course, is treatment which typically involves removal of one or both breasts via a surgical procedure called mastectomy. This operation is frequently combined with chemotherapy to dispose of any cancer cells that may remain in the body. While these are life-saving procedures, the quality of life of the patient can suffer with the removal of one or both her breasts. Women’s vanity comes into the picture, and thus, cosmetic surgery related to breast lift is very likely to be considered. Many of the women who lose their breast to cancer opt for breast reconstruction via several methods, the final choice of which can be arrived upon based on several considerations.

Implants, used in breast augmentation procedures, are top-of-mind choices for reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy. These prosthetic devices are generally divided into silicone gel or saline implants which the surgeon inserts behind the patient’s pectoral muscle. In some cases, the doctor will place the prosthesis as part of the mastectomy for the breast cancer. The usual approach in the breast reconstruction is to first expand the pectoral tissues to allow room for the implant. Then, a deflated balloon-like device will be implanted under the skin. For several months, this device will be gradually expanded, enabling the skin to gradually stretch over time. Once the skin has expanded sufficiently for a comfortable fit, the implant is then inserted.

Patience is the key during the period following breast reconstruction post-mastectomy. The recovery will take time. The patient will need rest which will be difficult as she will feel sore for several weeks. Furthermore, there is the likelihood of having drainage tubes attached for a few weeks after the operation in order to collect the excess fluid.

Several post-operative complications may also arise. The common possibilities include deflation or implant rupture and poor healing of the surgical wounds. Less frequent are infections which can be avoided if the doctors’ post-surgery advice is strictly followed. For those who only had one breast removed, it is advisable to have routine mammography screening. The other breast has to be regularly monitored in order to catch the cancer that may also develop. A periodic MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is also needed to ensure that the implant is intact.

It is also important to note that the reconstructive surgery won’t restore the original look of the breast or its sensation. Nonetheless, the procedure will help the patient regain self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as minimize the physical traces of the effects of breast cancer.
