If you are relocating to Buenos Aires and thinking of buying a property to live there, you need to find out something about the city. While the City of Buenos Aires is capital of Argentina, La Plata is the capital of the Province of Buenos Aires. Confusing? Not really. The city of Buenos Aires is an autonomous ‘Capital Federal’ city. Although it is within the Province of Buenos Aires, it is a completely separate Federal unit with 48 barrios or districts. Around the main city are 24 partidos in the Greater Buenos Aires area. These cities are physically linked to Buenos Aires, yet remain separate municipalities and part of the Province of Buenos Aires, also called Greater Buenos Aires. Another six partidos are in the process of being joined to the Gran Buenos Aires group. As the cities form a huge megapolis complex, you may decide to live anywhere within it that suits your work or business, or taste. One of the areas you may like to consider is La Plata. This is about an hour and a half out of Buenos Aires City on a regular bus route. La Plata means ‘The Silver’ and the area bears the same name as the Rio de la Plata, the river estuary on which Buenos Aires is built. The city is nicknamed "la ciudad de las diagonales" because of its diagonal street layout. It has an orderly grid pattern, with parks or plazas every six blocks. It is very well planned, with really beautiful buildings, some of which were designed by internationally competing architects, mostly in various European styles. The very beautiful Cathederal of La Plata should not be missed. It is called ‘Catedral de la Immaculada Concepcion’ and was built in 1884. It is huge and holds 14,000 people and is the largest Neogothic cathedral in both continents of America. It is a really pleasant city and there are many parks and so many trees that people sometimes call it ‘El Bosque’ or ‘The Forest’. One of the most renowned universities in Argentina, the National University of La Plata is situated in the city, with four of the city’s high schools also under its control. There are three other universities in La Plata as well. It is estimated that the population is over 700,000 and consists mainly of Italian and Spanish descendents, and significant numbers of Paraguayans, Peruvians, Germans, Arabic, Jewish and Polish people. At one time, during the 1950’s, the city of La Plata was renamed ‘Eva Peron City’ after the famous political figure. The Peron couple were married in the city. After a few years, however, the old name was reinstated. If you are a soccer fan, you will be pleased to note that ‘futbol’ is the most popular sport in La Plata. There are two first division soccer clubs in the city and the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata, recently built, is the most modern in Argentina. Among the many industries situated in La Plata, the oil distillery is the tenth largest in the world.
