Accommodation is probably the first thing you think of when you plan your visit to Buenos Aires. The city has 48 districts, called ‘barrios’. Where you decide to stay depends on your budget and also on what sort of visit this is going to be for you. If the cost is not relevant, you have a very wide choice of areas. El Centro, the city center is the business hub of Buenos Aires. While the shopping is wonderful and the area full of buzz and interest during the day, when the businesses close down in the evening, so do many of the shops and restaurants. It can be quite quiet at night. If you are after the nightlife in Buenos Aires, you would do better to think about Puerto Madero and Recoleta. But wherever you decide to stay, do visit the city center, as there is so much to see there. One or two highlights are: * Manzana las Luces. This is now the site of the University of Buenos Aires, and the San Ignacio Church, but long back it used to be a Jesuit studying place. * Avenida 9 de Julio, or The Avenue of the 9th of July. This is possibly the world’s widest street – 10 lanes of traffic! Puerto Madero used to be part of the docks, but has now been upgraded and is a delightful entertainment area in Buenos Aires. At night the lights on the water are not to be missed, as you stroll along the marina. You will find some of the best restaurants in the city, including outdoor cafes, as well as excellent shopping. There is also a floating casino. Accommodation is available from modestly priced but really attractive apartments right up to lap of luxury penthouses with every conceivable comfort. In the mid-1800s the up market area of the wealthy citizens of Buenos Aires was San Telmo. Then there was an outbreak of yellow fever in the area and many families hurriedly moved out to a new area, which is now called Ricoleta. Today this is a sumptuous area of large mansions, prestigious old schools and beautiful gardens. If you are spending a lengthy time in Buenos Aires, you may be able to hire one of these luxurious homes for your stay. This is one of the best areas to be if you enjoy gourmet dining, or the atmosphere of French-style sidewalk cafes on wide, tree shaded boulevards. There is wonderful shopping and vibrant nightlife and entertainment, too. It is an area of luxury hotels, art galleries, family mansions and foreign embassies, and some of these beautiful buildings and historic sites are well worth the visit: * The Ricoleta Cemetary and the Pilar Church. * The beautiful National Library building. * Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernandez Blanco. * The Modern Art Museum. * The National Museum of Fine Arts. * The National Museum of Decorative Art. * Palais de Glace.
