Most people dedicate the first two decades of their adult life to their children and families. Then as we meander our way through our 40’s, we realize that our children don’t need us as much and the family has finally begun to function on automatic pilot. (Well, sometimes anyways). It gives them the motivation to continue to negotiate the obstacles, it gives them the self-confidence to pursue a dream that they have set aside for two or more decades, it gives them the courage to look beyond what they somehow have come to believe as their rather limited abilities. Many people wrestling with this transition phase of their lives sell themselves far short of what they truly can do and the vast array of skills they have to contribute! People can truly help each other through these life changing transitions times just by being there for each other. With a 30 plus year career in human services, I have come to realize that many times it is the simpler forms of help that can be the most effective in inspiring others to reinvent themselves. It can be an idea, it can be encouragement, it can be occasional support with a quick question like; “How’s your job search going?”, “Is that weight loss plan working out for you?”, “Did enrolling in that course help you narrow down your career interests at all?” Or if you have the opportunity to provide a more tangible form of inspiration, that is also great way to help as well. For example, when I embarked on an adventure to build a website, I received a ton of support and advice from other people who were creating their own online ebusiness.
