Thousands of people around the world risk their lives every day fighting for the freedom of their countries. For many, especially in the business world, war is a far away thought and story on the news that will never be a reality experienced first hand. Although this is the case, it is easy to forget how involved both government and civilian businesses are on the frontlines. In a down economy it is especially popular for people to take jobs as contractors overseas and in war zones. Civilian contracting jobs are especially prevalent now throughout the Middle East and are overwhelmingly common in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Where the Money Is
Working overseas is a great option for many people who can afford (physically, mentally, and emotionally) that type of lifestyle. Believe it or not, there are many high-paying jobs in war zones working alongside the military and other private businesses. Creating a career overseas can bring in the “Big Bucks,” especially working for places in Iraq and Afghanistan. Destinations like Qatar, Germany, and Japan are also viable options while having the luxury of staying out of harm’s way.
KBR is just one example of the leading companies responsible for running United States bases overseas. They are not only the “leading contractor for the US Army and a top-ten contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense, it is currently the world’s largest defense services provider…employing over 35,000 people worldwide,” according to KBR.com. Jobs with KBR range from engineering, procurement, lifecycle services, special facility services, construction and design, to project/program management, operations/maintenance, and logistics support.
Another high paying and extremely in demand job, especially on the counterterrorism effort in Taliban-infested countries, is translation. Translating skills are often hard to come by, which makes this job appealing for people who can do it. In a war zone, translators can make $4,000 plus a week. The first $87, 600 is also tax free because of being out of country. People who choose this path will get paid well because they work twice as hard and longer, if not more, than the average worker back home. The hazards and hardships that these people have to face in their career also accounts for getting paid more.
How to Get These Jobs
Obtaining these jobs can happen in a number of different ways. The Internet is a great resource for finding overseas jobs. Web Sites like Clearancejobs.com
equire a security clearance. Since KBR is the largest contractor in Iraq, their website is also a great place to begin your search. Many of the jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan require a certain level of physical ability. The conditions are not the same as working in the United States, so this is why being in good shape is important. Most of the jobs are outside and it will be hot in the summer time without much air conditioning during training. The heat in the Middle East takes a toll on people who are not acclimated to it. Most people who work overseas, especially in war zones, are able to make a lot of money while saving most of it at the same time. Some people get these types of jobs for temporary reasons and others make it their lives. Overall, there are many options to both begin and advance individuals’ careers overseas.
