As hard as it may be to believe, there was a time when women and girls did not or could not participate in sports. Today, about one-third of female high school students in the U.S. play sports. Things are even more encouraging at the university level, where female participation in sports has trebled in the last forty years! What happened? Attitudes and laws changed, not necessarily in that order. At the amateur and professional level, females made great strides and were finally accepted as serious competitors, rather than sideshows or novelties. It took several centuries, especially in games and sports where women were expected to look and act as ladies at all times. According to historians, golf was invented in Scotland in the 15th century. The game had a small, yet loyal following, all of whom viewed it as a civil, genteel game. While women did occasionally play, most notably Mary Queen of Scots, they were circumscribed by their attire. There was, of course, no such thing as sportswear at the time. Women had to wear heavy dresses and petticoats on the links. As fashions changed and the game made its way to America, female participation increased. However, women were always expected to be ladies first and golfers second. They were expected to dress conservatively in proper attire, which generally meant light dresses or blouses. Long-sleeves were considered de rigueur and skirts could only come up a few inches off the ground. With more and more women playing the game, designers finally decided to make apparel for female golfers. Coats with special sleeves that allowed more motion, adjustable skirts, and cardigan golf sweaters were all introduced in the early 1900s. Two-piece dresses came along a bit later as did plain or pleated skirts, which were often worn with sweaters or vests. Because showing too much skin was considered indecent or unladylike, most female golfers wore patterned stockings. A one-piece dress called the shirtmaker was also quite popular at the time. What are golf skorts? The name alone is enough to make you scratch your head. No, it isn’t a real word, but a portmanteau one. That is, the term “skort” is a conflation of the words “skirt” and “shorts.” This popular article of golf apparel has two leg openings, like shorts, and a fabric panel that covers them in front. In other words, they look like skirts, but feel like shorts. Golf skorts were a hit with female players from the start. Why? The most likely explanation is that they let women play as hard as the guys while retaining their femininity. Golf skorts were developed in the 1960s when golf and country clubs started admitting female players in growing numbers. It has since become one of the most popular articles of golf apparel for women. Where to find them? Golf skorts for women can be found at just about any pro shop or at select sporting goods stores. But don’t expect to get a discount! Like most articles of specialty clothing, retailers tend to mark them up quite considerably. One easy and reliable way to save on golf skorts for women and girls is to buy them on the internet.
