Wanting to start their own business is a dream many in the U.S. have, but people often feel not quite ready to go get started on their own. There are other options for those with the drive to be their own boss though, and buying a franchise could offer just the solution. It is essential that what is involved with running a franchise is clearly understood though. From understanding what a franchise is through finding the best one, and on to things to consider before taking the plunge, this article should help with that. What is a franchise? There are a large number of global companies which are operated as franchises. An incredibly effective way to grow a business, the strategy sells territorial licenses, allowing people to operate their own business using the franchisor's name. There are many advantages that buying a franchise brings to the table, such as fewer risks than a start-up can be exposed to and a higher success rate. It is essential that certain elements be understood and questions asked before agreeing to a license though. Finding a suitable franchise While the base operation of a franchise is much the same from one to the other, there are certain differences that can be in place. Commonly, the business format franchise is applied though, which exchanges – for an initial cost and ongoing fees – the right to trade under a company name and follow the business model. This also provides training, use of intellectual properties, access to the customer database, and ongoing support. Buying a franchise serving consumers or other businesses are both options, while others can service both groups, such as a printing company. Having an interest in, existing knowledge of, or experience in the industry could prove helpful, but isn’t always essential. Things to consider As much as there are benefits to buying a franchise, so too are there some negative things to be aware of. On the plus side, a franchise is a tried and tested business model, with brand recognition helping to quickly build customers – supplier relationships already being in place – and with the best franchisors, a good support network. On the negative side though, it can be expensive, with the cost of fees being prohibitive if not managed well. Further still, there may also not be any flexibility in regards to where supplies are purchased from, while business decisions, largely controlled by the business model, can be restrictive. The best franchisors will always be clear and upfront about what is involved, while also offering competitive deals. The next steps To ensure the right decision is made, it is essential to thoroughly research the franchise being considered. Looking at the experiences of other franchisees, both good and bad, is important too. Understanding how the operation will be financed is also important, though preferable lending rates are often available from lenders. The final thing to do before buying a franchise, going through the agreement carefully – ideally with the help of an attorney – will ensure that everything is in order and good to go, so that bright future can get off to the best possible start.
