Cadiz Tourist Guide – Spain

Cadiz is a famous historical city located at the tip of the narrow and stony peninsula that extends into the Atlantic Ocean. According to mythology, this city was first discovered by Hercules, but historical evidence shows that the city was founded by the Phoenicians in 1100 BC, making Cadiz one of the oldest historical places in Europe. After the Phoenicians, this city was ruled by various civilizations like the Romans, Carthaginians, Visigoths and Moors. In the 18th century, the city went through great economic growth. This was the golden period in the history of Cadiz and a lot of trade took place through the port of the city. This was the time when a lot of construction also took place in the city and you will now find some of the best architecture of that time here. Currently, the port is still very busy and the Old Town of Cadiz is renowned for its famous landmark, the Nueva Catedral, unique for its yellow dome. Constructed in the Baroque design, it was started in the year 1722 and finished in 1853. Cadiz Museum is another important place and is located near the Plaza de la Mina. This museum has three sections and each one has an exclusive collection of artistic work. You will also find some artifacts dating back to the Phoenician, Greek and Roman civilizations. The Museo de las Cortes de Cadiz is another place worth visiting and has displays dating back to the era of the Franco-Spanish War. Playa de la Caleta is the central beach of the city and located near Barrio de la Vina in the Old Town. This beach provides interesting views in the evening and currently a Hollywood picture is being filmed here as well. This is a busy beach during the summers and has many bars and cafes to meet the visitors' demand. Night-life is lively, as there are many discos and bars located in the harbor.Cadiz is also known for its different festivals especially the one which is organized in the month of February which is among the very good and big festivals of spain villa . This festival continues for ten days and people start making their costumes for it months in advance.The train station of the city is located in the Plaza de Sevilla and a number of train services are available to different cities in the country.
