The consumption of electricity is measured by an electricity meter. It calculates the amount of electrical energy consumed by business or residence. It measures consumption of electricity by any electrically powered device.

Standard electricity meters are calibrated in billing units. The most common billing unit is the kilowatt hour (kWh). An electric meter is read periodically to find out the billing cycle and the electrical energy utilized during a cycle.

A person doing assorted electrical jobs is known as an electrician. He is entrusted with the task of maintaining and repairing electrical work. Kilowatt hour (kWh) is equal to the amount of energy used by a load of one kilowatt over a period of one hour. It equals 3,600,000 joules. A few electricity providers use the SO megajoule in place of kilowatt hour. Electricity demand is measured in watts. The demand is averaged over a period. The usual period is taken to be quarter or half hour.

Volt-amperes calculate all power that passes through a distribution network. It includes both actual and reactive. This is equal to the product of root-mean-square volts and amperes. Distortion of electric current due to loads is calculated in several ways. Power factor is the ratio of resistive or real power to volt-amperes. A capacitive load has a leading power factor, and an inductive load has a lagging power factor. A purely resistive load like a heater shows a power factor of one. Current harmonics are a measure of distortion of the wave form. For example, electronic loads like computers draw their current at the voltage peak to fill their internal storage elements. This can result in a considerable drop in voltage near the supply voltage peak which is displayed as a flattening of the voltage waveform. This flattening leads to odd harmonics that are not possible if they exceed particular limits. They are wasteful and may interfere with the functioning of other equipment.

Alternative units of measurement of electrical energy once existed. Meters that measure coulombs or the amount of charge being used is called ampere-hour meters. These meters had a weakness of depending upon the supply voltage remaining constant for accurate measurement of energy used. This is practically impossible for most electricity providers. This is why ampere-hour meters are not used nowadays.

Electricity meters operate by continuously calculating the volts and amperes and finding the product of these two to give watts. The watt is then integrated against time to give energy used like joules and kilowatt-hours. Residential meters can be connected directly in-line between the source and the customer. For larger loads, specifically for more than 200 ampere load, current transformers are used. In this case, the meter can be located other than in line with the service conductors. The sector offers a number of electrical jobs to aspirants.
