It's an old story. You join a gym, go two or three times, then lose your enthusiasm. Not only do you feel like a failure, but you've thrown money down the drain. For all the gym memberships sold each year, there are few success stories. That may be why in-home personal training is on the rise. The fancy gym membership is just a perk. It doesn't matter where you work out, as long as you work out, right? All it really takes is a little space, some simple equipment, and a DVD or two. The in-home exercise craze has flourished over the past 20 years, but many people still find their motivation waning after a few sessions. That's where personal trainers come in. Sure, you have to pay them, but you may find it money well spent. Knowing your trainer is going to show up and expect your cooperation may be just the motivation you need to make you finally stick to your exercise program and work on fitness. Being accountable to someone works. As for the cost, it's not as expensive as you may think, especially when you consider the fees, restrictions, and inconveniences of gym membership. If your budget is tight, you can arrange for one or two friends to work out with you and share costs. Another benefit of in-home personal training is the one-on-one attention and privacy. Your personal trainer will get to know you and understand your goals. More importantly, a personal trainer can adjust your routine depending on your progress or physical abilities. He or she can help you find your sweet spot, so you're working out without overdoing and becoming frustrated. Choose a certified personal trainer and check references. Ask potential trainers about their style and specialties. Explain your goals. Are you interested in weight loss, muscle-building, general health, athletic competition? For the technologically inclined, video conferencing allows you to stay in touch with your personal trainer when you're traveling or simply can't get together. After you and your trainer agree on your goals and your time commitment, stick to it. It may take some time to fall into a routine that feels comfortable. Once the privilege of the very wealthy, in-home personal training is now widely available and affordable. It's not an exercise fad – it's the wave of the future.
