When when we think of acne, we often imagine an adolescent. After all, puberty is a common time for acne to appear. We are then led to believe that once we achieve adulthood, acne can no longer affect us. Yet, that is not true for everyone. Adult Acne Can Impact Anyone Many people regain a clear complexion once they reach adulthood. Yet, for others acne continues to hold them. Some people may even experience acne for the first time during their adult years. It is not unheard of to experience acne in your 30s, 40s, and even 50s. The Rhyme and Reason behind Adult Acne A majority of adult acne sufferers are women. This is because of all the hormone fluctuations that occur each month as well as during menopause. Despite that, acne does not discriminate. Male or female, adult acne can happen to you. Yet, this is not the only reason that adult acne occurs. In fact, acne throughout adulthood can occur for several reasons. Female hormone fluctuations are one such cause of adult acne. The monthly menstrual cycle is one explanation. Pregnant women or those entering menopause phases are at risk for adult acne. These are periods when the hormones are fluctuating the most. Women who are beginning or discontinuing birth control pills are at risk. These medications invoke the fluctuation of hormones as a form of contraception. Stress can do a lot to your body, but stress alone does not cause acne. Yet, too much stress releases the hormone androgen. From there, all that it takes is a blocked oil gland, hair follicle or the like for a breakout to occur.rnGenetics can play a key role if acne problems run in the family. Yet, even if you are prone to acne, that does not mean that you will experience it. Some people with genetic predispositions never experience the condition at all while others do. Cosmetics can lead to breakouts resulting from clogged pores among other reasons. When choosing cosmetics, read the labels. Opt for oil free, non-acnegenic and non-comedogenic products. The medications that you put into your body can sometimes trigger breakouts as a side effect. Know your medications and discuss your options with your provider. Your doctor can help you determine what is best for your specific situation. Acne Solutions The common solution for acne is the use of chemicals, prescription medications or therapies. Yet, nothing is without its side effects. Many acne aids are sold in retail stores across the country. While they work for some people, they are not effective for everyone or every situation. Prescription therapies are effective for many acne sufferers. Yet, they, too, come with their disadvantages. Some people have reported discomfort from some of the treatments. If the discomfort does not get you, the price tag will. Some treatments cost anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Natural solutions are on the rise these days as well. Essential oils, herbs and plant products were used by our ancestors for centuries. They provided natural solutions to common everyday problems.
