When bands and musicians are just starting up, there is not always a lot of room to afford the expenses that it takes to have professional recordings and an album produced. In most cases, musicians turn to computerized software that allows them to record their tracks on their own for a very small, one-off, software fee. If the band does not have a vocalist to record their singing live, it helps to be able to use vocal samples. Even if the band does have a vocalist, vocal samples can be used to add in background singing to their songs. Samples can sound just as good as live recordings as long as they are blended into the song to create a natural feel. Samples of vocals sometimes come with computer recording software. However, there are not always very many choices to select from and most of the samples may not fit with the song that is being recorded at all. In this case, downloading samples from the internet is a great option to have. Depending on what samples are being downloaded and where they are downloaded from, prices can range from being free to a few dollars per sample and upwards. Once the samples are downloaded, they can be implemented into the recording software and added into any song recordings. While live recordings are typically better than recordings of vocals, this is not always the case. Live recordings usually sound more natural in a song than samples do. When recording live, the singer is able to give their own words to the song and sing in a way that fits the style of the music. Recordings give musicians limited options of what they can add and what sounds right with their song. For example, if a recording is found that sounds good with the music, but the words are not what the band was looking for, the vocals will not match the style of the band at all. With a little searching and knowing exactly what type of vocals will sound good with the song, recordings can be just as good, if not better, than live vocals. Recordings of vocals should be placed into songs in such a way that they do not sound forced or fake. This is a problem that many have when trying to use recordings. Try manipulating the vocals so that they blend in with the song and sound like they could have been recorded live. As long as the vocals do not sound robotic, many may not even know that they are not live recordings.
