Can CMS Become Problematic for SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) dealing largely with good content is expected to perform well when an effective CMS (Content Management System) is implemented, as the scope for fresh and informative content increases drastically. So far, we have known CMS as one of the best friends of SEO. However, you might change your perception if you go through the following possible conditions.
- Dynamic URLs: Top search engines are programmed to curb the number of indexed dynamic pages. The primary way the search engines uses to determine dynamic pages is through page URLs with special characters (%&=). So, even if CMS is creating number of fresh content they might not be indexed and you remain in illusion that since you are providing fresh content it should bring traffic and do well for SEO.
- Poor meta tags: Meta tags are the components of HTML code which is used to enable search engines to know about page. In contrary to that several CMS systems restrict users to assign uniquely relevant ‘title’ and ‘description’ meta tags to the content. These tags are important to make as they help search engines identify your pages.
- Lack of keyword in URLs: Most CMSs which do not use dynamic URLs also do not allow user create keyword-rich URLs. It is important for URLs to have keyword as this helps the site and its pages optimize and rank well in top search engines listings.
- Unfriendly search engine design: Even if you have got an award winning page design, code of the page still matters a lot. Reason, search engines are not bothered about the design of your page, what all they have to do with is its code. Create code for the pages that are easily crawled by the search engine spiders. Avoid script-based navigation, text in the form of images, excessive use of AJAX and other practices as they are jut useless for crawlers. Prefer using CSS and semantic markup based layout and navigation for the coding of pages. Such pages are easily crawled and understood by search engines.
Hence, it is not really important that the CMS program being followed will definitely help SEO, until and unless CMS program follows the terms of SEO. It is extremely important that CMS is up to the requirements of SEO to make it search engine friendly. Else there is no use of adding and refreshing content after content. After all what is the use of content management which is unable to make a site search engine friendly and incapable to bring it in good ranking?
