Deviated Nasal SeptumrnWhat is a deviated nasal septum? What are the implications of this condition? Does it cause sinus problems for a person? These are just some of the questions that might run on your mind if you are diagnosed with having deviated nasal septum. Ideally, the nasal septum is located in the center of your nose, equally separating the right and left nasal cavities. However, an abnormality can occur wherein the thin wall inside your nose is displaced to one side. This condition is known as deviated nasal septum. It is a very common physical disorder of the nose, frequently caused by impact trauma to the face or compression of the nose during childbirth. For most people, this condition can go undetected for years unless it brings pain or causes sinus problems. Sinus Problems and Its Common CausesrnIf you are wondering whether a deviated nasal septum causes sinus problems, the answer is yes. When the nasal septum leans to one side substantially, it can cause obstruction in the nasal passages. This can result in poor drainage in the sinuses, making it prone to infection. If this is the case, it is recommended to undergo medical procedures to correct a deviated septum and prevent sinus problems. Sinus problems can also be caused by other factors. Infection is most often brought about by bacteria, virus and fungi trapped inside the sinuses, along with other irritants. Being constantly exposed to allergens which triggers allergic reactions can also cause sinus problems. Upper respiratory infections such as common colds can also develop into a full-blown sinus problem if not taken cared of. Another possible cause of sinus problems is having abnormal growths in the nose, such as nasal polyps, cysts or tumors. These abnormal growths can cause obstruction and impair normal drainage in the sinuses. Eliminating Sinus ProblemsrnIf you are diagnosed with having a deviated nasal septum and experiencing sinus problems, do not worry too much about it. This condition can be easily corrected by undergoing a minor surgical procedure known as septoplasty. With this procedure, the nasal septum is straightened by removing the bones and cartilage causing the obstruction inside the nose. This is a very simple procedure and will take only one to three weeks for the patient to fully recover. Sinus problems caused by other factors are also treatable. There are certain drugs that can be prescribed depending on the cause of infection, such as antibiotics, corticosteroids and antifungal medicines. Aside from these, home remedies are also effective against sinus problems, such as herbal remedies, sinus rinsing and steam treatments. To know more on how you can effectively get rid of your sinus problems, see your doctor and ask about the available options.
