Students from the freshman class of 2014 were asked to participate in the survey at Princeton University to determine whether co-relation existed between neuropsychiatric disorders and their choice of major subjects. They were asked to fill out forms indicating why they chose a particular discipline as well as disclose information about mental and neurological disorders in self, family members, grandparents or other close relatives.
Mental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were considered for the survey. Researchers aimed at finding a connection between these mental illnesses and inclination towards choice of subject. Most illnesses did not have relationship with academic choices of a student except for a few. Medical prescriptions were not considered, though people do buy Cymbalta from our generic Canadian pharmacy to effectively treat major depressive and general anxiety disorders.
Earlier studies have been reported linking intellectual interests with mental illness. For example, a study conducted on 30 creative writers found connection between family history of mental illness and literary creativity exhibited by the writers. The study did substantiate suggestions linking creativity of brilliant artists with some sort of mental disorder.
Choices made when majoring in technology, math, engineering, and other STEM degrees were related to reports of opting students having a family history of autism spectrum disorder. Researchers found 4 aspiring nontechnical majors and 16 aspiring technical majors confirmed having siblings affected by the disorder among 1,077 students who took part in the current survey. Technically-inclined students had more chances of having a close relative affected by autism spectrum disorder.
On the other hand, aspiring humanities students reported cases of bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, or substance abuse among close family members. It was quite evident intellectual preferences did have connection to mental disorders. There is a link between environmental factors and mental illnesses. The present survey does not establish a definite cause for making the various choices, but experts feel it may be a combination of different factors including family history of mental illnesses, environmental and genetic factors.
Other mental disorders were also connected with choice of subjects but to a lesser extent. Researchers found 167 students reporting addiction or substance abuse, 150 suffering from major depression, and 51 with family history of bipolar disorder. They found it difficult to explain why a co-relation existed between choice and mental disorders, as a small number of students participated in the survey.
Experts find students good in math but demonstrating poor social skills are often diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The current study, for instance, cannot establish a definite connection between ethnic or immigrant backgrounds with less inclination to acknowledge mental disorders. Our generic Canadian pharmacy is, nevertheless, convinced such studies will eventually help in unraveling complexities existing in mental disorder diagnosis.
