Carpeting Trends

There are trends in fashion. There are trends in television. There are trends in the culinary arts. Sometimes, it almost feels like there are trends in trends. Yet there are fields that most people would not think about as having trends, mostly because the artistry in these fields is overlooked generally. Most homes have a carpet of some kind, but many people tend to overlook the fact that someone actually had to sit down, sacrifice time and the tips of a lot of no.2 pencils to design that carpet. Someone has to spend their day handpicking specific fabrics to be applied to the carpet backing. Someone has to decide on the colors of a carpet and how it will blend with whatever may be spilled on it in the future. This hypothetical someone is indeed a multitude of someone’s, responsible for burgeoning new trends in the carpeting industry, and new trends there are a plenty. One of the biggest trends in modern carpeting is the use of bolder and brighter colors. This can be attributable to numerous causes, including being swept in with the general artistic trend in the application of louder and vibrant colors, and landlords who are sick of having to clean up all highly visible beer stains left behind by their college-aged tenants. Consumers are purchasing carpets in droves that are richer in color (i.e. rose red, chocolate brown). These carpets are typically being used for rooms that are more likely to have guests in them, like the dining room or living room. Softer shaded carpets, like peach, are being picked up as well, but are more frequently being used in the bedrooms. For a long time, the carpet industry strayed away from using patterns, but as of late, patterns that were recognizable in bygone eras like the 70s seem to be making something of a comeback. Striped carpets and checkered carpets are the more prevalent trends in the industry. The general principle is that carpets with bigger, splashier patterns should be used in rooms with more foot traffic, as a way to impress guests. One of the best things about patterned carpeting is that it hides a lot of wear and tear from the unsuspecting eye. The eyes of a visitor will be so drawn to the neat design on the carpet that he or she will overlook that little bit of wine that found its way to the fabric a few days ago. More and more carpet designers are keen on the texture of their carpets as of late. Texture for a carpet is more important for carpets with neutral tones such as beige. The textures that designers are using vary from designer to designer. Some are being bold and using chunky bobbles, whereas others are choosing a more subtle approach by using herringbone. Textured carpeting is not for everyone though, nor is it for every room in the house. Most designers will warn you that getting food stains out of textured carpeting can be something of a chore, so avoid putting these carpets in the dining room. Every industry has its trends. Right now, the film industry seems to be enjoying a vampire trend, what with films like “Twilight” and “Let Me In.” This trend is certainly more lucrative and more attractive to the press, but not necessarily more labored than a trend evolving in the field of carpeting.
