Of the two major sexual dysfunctions, about 20% men suffer from erectile dysfunction while the other 80% suffer from premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation or rapid ejaculation occurs when a man ejaculates shortly after copulating with his partner.rnPremature ejaculation causes distress among both partners as it allows neither partner to enjoy the sexual act in a proper manner. A man may be frustrated & stressed for ejaculating early, where as his partner maybe dissatisfied at not reaching an orgasm. The man loses confidence in his sexual performance while the woman suffers in silence with the fear of upsetting her partner or becomes frustrated if the partner is not willing to fix his problem.rnPremature ejaculation can have both psychological and biological causes.rnSome of the psychological causes are: • Early sexual experience where excitement mixed anxiety and a demand to finish quickly with the fear of being caught. • Anxiety and stress where the focus is on performance 'to get it right' rather than enjoying sexual pleasure. • Fear of obtaining and maintaining an erection during sexual intercourse and then rushing to ejaculate quickly. This pattern once formed is difficult to change.rnWhile the biological cause are: • Abnormal hormone levels. • Certain thyroid problems. • Inflammation or infection of the prostate or urethra • Inherited traitsrnSolutions for treating premature ejaculation:rnThe Use of behavioural therapy: rnsqueeze technique: rnWhen a man feels that he is about to ejaculate, he withdraws from his partner, then he or his partner squeezes the shaft of his penis with the thumb and two fingers gently then letting go to resume sexual activity.rnThe stop and start method: rnThe man has to recognize when he is about to ejaculate and then slow down to reduce stimulation so that he extents the time till ejaculation. By starting and stopping the sexual stimulation you can prolong the sex act.rnAbstaining from intercourse: rnTo help reduce anxiety couples may require to, abstain from sex for a short period of time, giving him more time to prepare himself for the sexual act.rnMore foreplay: rnCouples require to, indulge in more foreplay to get aroused by stimulating each other before copulating. This way orgasm and ejaculation can be achieved almost at the same time by the couple.rnMasturbation: rnIn some cases of behavioural therapy, masturbating an hour or two before intercourse helps in delay of ejaculation and stimulation till arousal before sexual contact.
