Despite widespread reliance on western drugs, yoga has been used for thousands of years for concerns like blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against blood vessel problem. The heart pumps blood into the arteries (blood vessels), which carry the blood throughout the body. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body and it contributes to hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis and the development of heart failure. Blood pressure usually refers to the arterial pressure of the systematic circulation. During each heartbeat, blood pressure varies between a maximum and a minimum pressure. The blood pressure in the circulation is principally due to the pumping action of the heart. Differences in mean blood pressure are responsible for blood flow from one location to another in the circulation. The rate of mean blood flow depends on the resistance to flow presented by the blood vessels. Mean blood pressure decreases as the circulating blood moves away from the heart through arteries, capillaries and veins due to viscous losses of energy. Mean blood pressure drops over the whole circulation, although most of the fall occurs along the small arteries and arterioles. Gravity affects blood pressure via hydrostatic forces (e.g. during standing) and valves in veins, breathing, and pumping from contraction of skeletal muscles also influence blood pressure in veins. The measurement blood pressure without further specification usually refer to systematic arterial pressure and is measured at person’s upper arm and is measure of the brachial artery, major artery at the upper arm. The blood pressure of a person’s is expressed as a systolic pressure over diastolic pressure and is measured in millimeters of mercury. Blood pressure are usually categorized into three parts low (90/60 lower), high (140/90 or higher), normal (values above 90/60 and below 130/80). Average value of arterial pressure can be computed for any population but there is often large variation from person to person; arterial pressure in individual varies from moment to moment. Various factors, such as age or gender factor influence the average value, influence a person’s average blood pressure and variation. In children average blood pressure is lower than that of adults depending upon the height. As adults age, systolic pressure tends to raise and diastolic pressure fall. In elderly body, blood pressure remains high normal adult range, largely because reduced flexibility of the arteries. Also, individual blood pressure varies with the exercise, emotions, time of the day, stress etc. difference between left and right blood pressure tend to be random and average to nearly zero if enough measurements are taken. The exact factors of high blood pressure are not known. Several conditions may play role in its development: • Smokingrn• Being overweight or obesern• Lack of physical activityrn• Too much of salt in the foodrn• Too much consumption of alcoholrn• Stressrn• Old agern• Geneticsrn• Family history of high blood pressurern• Chronic kidney diseasern• Adrenal and thyroid disorder rnHypotension is abnormally low blood pressure, especially in the arteries of systematic circulation. It is best understood at physiological stage rather than a disease. Some of the causes of low blood pressure are: • Low blood volumern• Hormonal changesrn• Widening of blood vesselsrn• Medicine side effectsrn• Anemiarn• Heart andrn• Endocrine problemsrnIt is important to keep your blood pressure under control. The treatment goal is to keep the blood pressure below 140/90 and lower for the people with the other conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habit is an affective first step for keeping the blood pressure under control. If change in lifestyle alone is not helpful in keeping blood under control, it may be necessary to add blood pressure medicine to keep it controlled.
