Causes of Bone Cancer

A bone cancer, also called, bone tumor, is said to be a neoplastic growth of tissue in bone. Abnormal growths observed in the bones can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Bone tumors can be classified under two categories,one known as “primary tumors“, which originate within the bone or from cells and tissues which are derived from bone, second one as “secondary tumors” which originate in other sites and spread (metastasize) up to the skeleton. Carcinomas of the prostate, lungs, breasts, kidneys and thyroids are the primary carcinomas that most commonly spread to the bone. Secondary tumors are 50 to 100 times as common as primary bone cancers.

However, research has identified certain risk factors. According to them, patients with chronic (long-term) inflammatory diseases, such as Paget’s disease are at a significantly higher risk of developing bone cancer in later part of their lives. However, nobody can justify that why one person gets bone cancer while another one doesn’t when all other biological parameters of the human body are more or less same. This disease is also not contagious so there should not be any fear in you that you might catch this disease from someone else.

Some experts also believe that some of the causes of bone cancer can be hereditary i.e. a person can suffer from this disease if his/her closer relative (parent or sibling) has succumbed to this disease. Patients who have received radiation therapy (radiotherapy) or having a history of Paget’s disease show quite a good affinity to this disease. Babies born with an umbilical hernia are also at risk of getting trapped in this disease. People with Li-Fraumeni syndrome which is itself a very rare genetic condition can also be in a danger of being hit by this disease. Previous treatment of a patient with chemotherapy can also be one of the causes of Bone cancer.
