Transitional cell cancer is a cancer occurring in the urinary system that includes the kidneys, urinary bladder and accessory organs. It is one of the most common types of bladder and kidney cancer. It has been found to be the most common type of bladder cancer and urethra. Transitional cell cancer happens to be the second most common form of kidney cancer. This type of cancer is an example of malignancy caused by carcinogenic influences existing in the home or working environment. Smoking tobacco is considered to be one of the leading causes of transitional cell cancer. For workers exposed to chemicals in the petroleum industry, paints and pigment industry and also agrochemicals manufacturing industry, this exposure serves as an influence in increasing the risks if transitional cell cancer. It has been noticed though that the risk of transitional cell cancer lowers with increased consumption of liquids as it causes increased urine production and requires frequent washing down of liquid waste from the body allowing the least possible contact of the waste with the inner tissue lining of the urinary system. Inversely the risk increases considerably when there is a lot of delay between emptying the bladder as this increases the contact time between liquid waste and inner tissue of urinary system and may cause transitional cell cancer.
Patients are many a times known to have more than one tumor when they come in for treatment. One of the main and most visible symptoms of transitional cell cancer includes blood in urine which many times may or may not be visible to naked eye and in case it is not clearly visible may it may require detailed microscopic examination. Pain in the flank and abdomen are also some of the symptoms of transitional cell cancer though mostly it is detected while examining other ailments. The first assessment the doctors make is based on the medical history of the patients and based on the results may advise on the regular blood or urine tests to more advance imagining by a CT scan or a MRI. In case of transitional cell cancer the doctors may even opt for cyctoscopy which involves images obtained form a camera mounted at the end of a flexible tube to get the actual level of infection and spread of cancer cells for formulating the best treatment regimen.
Summary: Transitional cell cancer is the one of the most common forms of bladder and kidney cancer. The symptoms are difficult to identify and patient’s medical history plays an important role in determining the extent to which cancer may have affected the person.
