Many people might think that CCTV systems are designed for commercial use only. They record the actions of shoppers in stores, employees in offices and other activities in public areas. If something were to occur, such as a burglary or other crime, these CCTV systems allow business owners to play back the recording to see exactly what happened and by whom. CCTV systems are certainly perfect for these situations; however, they are practical for home security use as well, particularly if they are used in conjunction with a comprehensive home security system.

CCTV systems can replace the need for body guards or attack dogs and they can be a powerful deterrent, if the equipment is mounted in an areas that are easily visible. If you have made the choice to install a CCTV system in your home, here are some points to consider before you buy.

1. What kind of CCTV system should you get?
You will have various kinds of systems to choose from. There are wireless systems, which are easy to install but can experience interference and wired systems, which tend to be more reliable. You can also get systems that come with IP cameras that are connected to a computer network. This will allow you to keep an eye on your property even if you are not physically in the house. These cameras can be accessed from computers, smartphones and other Internet-capable devices.

2. What kind of cameras do you want?
There are dome cameras, bullet cameras and several other styles. This really depends on your taste and how visible you want them to be. Remember, if your goal is to deter would-be criminals, you will want the most conspicuous cameras you can buy.

3. How durable do you need your cameras to be?
If you are mounting your cameras outside, you will need them to be constructed out of heavy duty materials that are weather resistant. If you use cameras that are meant for inside only, you will end up having to spend even more money to replace them when they become damaged by the elements.

4. How sensitive do you want your cameras to be and what resolution do you want?
Resolution and sensitivity are two features of cameras that you will need to consider. The higher the resolution, the better your recordings will be, but the more money you will spend as well. However, you do need to be sure your recordings are clear so if an incident occurs, you will be able to identify the perpetrator.

People all over the country are starting to add CCTV to their overall home security system. They are an effective way to keep crime rates down and protect their homes and families. If you already have a security system in place, adding CCTV to your system is an excellent idea.
