CGPA to percentage conversion

We must confess that Indian students are not very accustomed with the CGPA rating scale. Most of the Indian schools and colleges give the marks to the students in the form of percentage. However, CBSE board has adopted 10 point score CGPA up to Class ten. Students who are willing to study MBA or MS abroad need to convert their scores or percentage in CGPA sometimes to fill up forms that are circulated online. Also sometimes the students who have their score in CGPA are asked to convert their scores in percentage. The students may face some difficulty as they are not sure what’s the procedure of conversion. Though most of the universities or colleges can have their own rule of conversion, there is a standardised rule of converting CGPA to percentage and that is multiplying CGPA score to 9.5. So if you want to know that 10 CGPA is how much percentage, you have to simply multiply 10 with 9.5 to get the percentage, that is, 95%.

Some universities ask for CGPA while some ask for percentage. Some students might find it difficult but it is not very difficult today as there are many CGPA to percentage converting calculators available online. Also, if one wants to convert the same manually, he just has to multiply the CGPA score with 9.5. It is as simple as that. The formula is given by CBSE and is considered as a standardised one to calculate the percentage. Also if someone wants to convert percentage to CGPA, he just has to go the other way round. CGPA

CGPA is basically Cumulative Grade Point Average which is obtained by calculating the average of the scores that a person has scored over all in the examination, excluding the additional subject. Recently, in 2017, Central Board of Secondary Education announced that class tenth board results would be given in CGPA while the twelfth board results would continue to be in percentage form. Thus, students of class tenth have to maintain their performance and scores all year round as all of them is calculated while calculating the CGPA of class tenth. CGPA can be either in the form of even counts or simple points. Examples of CGPA scores can be 8, 8.2, 8,4,8.6 and so on.

Step by step guidance to CGPA to percentage conversion

Let us explain the conversion the CGPA to percentage conversion with an example.

Step 1: The very first step is adding the grade points of all five subjects. The grade points that are provided in the mark sheet are needed to be added in the first step to move on to the second step.

Step 2: Let us suppose the grade point of the first subject is 10, second subject is 8, third subject is 6, fourth subject is 10 and fifth subject is 5.

Step 3: We need to add the grade points, thus, (10+8+6+10+5)=39. Thus, 39 is the added sum of the grade points of the five subjects. The sixth or the additional subject is excluded from the calculation.

Step 4: After the addition of the grade points of the five subjects, the next step is to divide the total by the number of subjects. That is calculating the cumulative grade point average. The process is similar to calculating normal average. Thus, (39/5)= 7.8.

Step 4: Thus, now we have obtained the CGPA of the all five subjects, that is, 7.8.

Step 5: As we have got the CGPA, next step in calculating the percentage is to convert the CGPA score to percentage. This is done by simply multiplying the CGPA score with 9.5.

Step 6: Thus, here the percentage is; (7.8*9.5)= 74.1%. Thus, we have got the required percentage.

In this simple process, directed by Central Board of Secondary Education, one can calculate the percentage from his CGPA score or grade points. The process might be a bit long and time taking but as we see, the steps are extremely easy and require basic mathematical knowledge to be fulfilled.
