As you go about your typical daily routine, you undoubtedly use many of the same items repeatedly. Because these items are used so frequently, it is easy to overlook the need to replace them. However, frequent use may make it even more important to replace them periodically. Consider the last time you replaced some of these items, and determine if you should plan for their replacement today based on their age or condition. Your HVAC System’s Air Filter Your HVAC system recirculates air throughout your home, and in the process, it picks up a considerable amount of dust, dirt, pet dander and other indoor elements. The air filter captures many of these particles as the HVAC system runs. By doing so, it prevents the elements from continuing to circulate and promotes improved indoor air quality. It also keeps your HVAC equipment from getting as dirty as it may otherwise be. This dirt in the HVAC equipment could lead to more repairs, decreased longevity and reduced energy efficiency. Air filters should ideally be replaced every month. Your Mattress Many people only replace their mattress when it has been ruined, such as by a spill. Others replace it when it becomes so uncomfortable that it interferes with getting quality sleep. However, mattresses should be replaced every six to eight years in most cases. One reason for this is because mattresses can become saturated with dust, skin cells and other elements. They become prime breeding grounds for dust mites and other critters. Ultimately, an older mattress can result in lower quality sleep, aches and pains, fatigue and even respiratory problems. Your Toothbrush While some people replace their toothbrush like clockwork every month, others may not replace their toothbrush until the bristles are completely mashed up. An older toothbrush may be ineffective at cleaning your teeth and gums properly. This can lead to cavities, gingivitis and other oral health concerns. In addition, the grime on your older toothbrush may include bacteria and other elements that could lead to illness. You can see that keeping track of the age of these important items is essential for your health in various ways. As these and other daily items get older, they can lose their effectiveness. If these items have reached the end of their natural lifespan in your home, now is the time to replace them. Consider adding a reminder on your calendar so that you remember to replace them in a timely manner in the future.
