Childhood asthma is a condition most of us would not like our young ones to have but with a changing environment, global warming, pollution, chemical irritants and other such conditions asthma seems to be rising at an uninterruptible speed. It is a data that will surely concern almost all parents that about 1.1 million children suffer from wheezing in the UK alone. Asthma or the chronic inflammatory disease of the airway is a cause of concern and a condition that can be managed, but not completely cured. In asthma the airways of the lungs narrow down restricting the passage of the air into the lungs. Knowing the signs and the cause of asthma will help in the management of any occurrence of asthma attacks. Before considering any treatment on children for asthma it is most important to first to understand how asthma affects them; what the range of treatments available is; and what are the best treatment options for an individual considering their lifestyle and other treatment habits. The most common symptom of asthma is wheezing, whistling or a hissing as the child breathes. Shortness of breath happens mainly during night time. Coughing and chest tightness are other signs and symptoms that should not be taken lightly. The severity of asthma can be determined by the frequency of the attacks. Treatment of asthma is always done on a case by case basis. The entire treatment plan of an individual is completely determined by the doctor on considering facts such as the severity of the situation, overall health, risks and the triggers. In certain cases patients need complete desensitization from agents that caused the inflammation. Using asthma inhalers and nebulizers effectively is one of the most important parts of the treatment process. Both patients and their carers / parents should consider the use of devices designed to increase lung capacity naturally, easily and without the use of invasive drug treatment.
