Choosing the field of dentistry in college for a career might sound easy. Thou, it will take the studies will take years and will face many obstacles before the actually application. Dentists, as we all know, are professionals who maintain our teeth and mouth. Dentistry has several types of specialization depending on their field interest. Before enumerating these sub professions, there are some steps before entering in this profession. First of all you have to consider the main factor of your interest. Will it be beneficial to your career? Will it make you successful? Passion in any profession will achieve your goals. You study the course because you want it and not because your parents want you to do it. You can’t enjoy performing your profession if you don’t have the heart perform. You must have the feelings of loving your work to attain your dreams. Secondly, we have to consider the availability of the course. You have to finish the pre-med course before you can start the Bachelor of Science in any major field that engaged to dentistry. There are state universities and colleges that include pre-dental courses in some BS degrees. Regarding the major, all aspiring students should pass pre-requisites in biology, physics, statistics, and chemistry. After finishing college, you are required to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT). The result together with your GPAs and recommendation letters will require you to enter Dental School. It will take 4 years in Dental School to finish. The first two years will be concentrating on major dental courses and the remaining 2 years will be for the actual practice of the profession. As I mentioned earlier, there were various types of dentists depending on specialization and it will consume more years for you. Some are of these specialization are given below: Orthodontist- provides and put braces in your mouth for teeth structural problem. This is a 2-3 years addition in your study years. rnOral Surgeon- does some reconstructive operation in your mouth and it is considered the longest specialization in dentistry. You are looking for 4 to 6 years more. Prosthodontist- replaces the missing teeth by using implants, crowns, and bridges. You will take 3 more years of practice in this specialization. After completing the required years in each profession you will need to pass an examination to get your dentist’s license. The National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) administered by the American Dental Association. Exams includes are dental anatomy, occlusion, and knowledge in specific dental areas. Statistics shows that an average dentist can earn as much as $100,000 a year. Due to the booming population it is expected that there will be an increase in dentist’s number each year.
