Choosing A Charity You Can Trust

Many of us enjoy charitable giving, as it not only helps us to give to those that are in need but it can also benefit us at the end of the tax year. That doesn't mean, however, that you should simply give to the first charitable organization that you see. Some careful consideration needs to be given to the charity because you want to make sure that the majority of the gifts that you give are going to be distributed to those in need. This is something that needs to be taken into consideration, regardless of whether you plan on giving something physical or if you are going to be volunteering your time. You need to really get behind the charity and choose something that you can believe in. This is not only going to help you to feel better about your donation but it is also going to help to give you motivation, which is often an important part of charitable giving. Perhaps you can ask yourself some questions, such as what is important to me or perhaps what has touched my life in the past? For example, if you have had a lot of problems with cancer in your family or have lost a loved one to cancer that may be an obvious choice for you.

There are plenty of guides online that can help you in choosing an organization that is going to work well for you when it comes to charitable giving. You need to keep in mind, however, that not all the feedback that is provided online is going to be trustworthy. There are going to be those that will complain about an organization, simply because they had a bad experience with them. Typically, you can throw out the best and worst reviews that are available, as the truth tends to be somewhere in the middle. When you find an organization that you can trust in this way, you will feel better about the gifts that you are giving.

If you plan on donating a larger item, such as a boat or a car, you need to determine how they are going to accept that charitable contribution and what they are going to do at that point. Make sure that they are willing to pick up the item from you and provide for the transportation of it to their location. You should also make sure that they will allow you to pick the charity where the funds are going to be distributed. Finally, make sure that they are going to be able to walk you through the process of declaring what you gave to the charity on your taxes. They will often provide you with the necessary paperwork and some consultation so that you can do so properly.
