While there are several great online resources that direct people to local veterinarians who are comfortable in exotic animal treatments, for some people in certain remote places, veterinarians who can care for your exotic pet can be hard to find. What are the most important things to keep in mind when you are seeking the attention of an exotic pet veterinarian? Here are 5 essential considerations to choose a vet from the animal hospital Laguna Niguel: How many exotic animals (snakes, birds, ferrets, rabbits, etc.) has that veterinarian ever tried? While practice does not always make a perfect fit, it is definitely the best. The more animals of a given species a veterinarian examines, the more likely he or she will recognize the disease, the better able to recommend appropriate treatment. Most veterinarians receive little or no training at school about exotic species and if they really want to learn about these animals, they have to look for information on their own. These veterinarians who take the initiative to go the extra mile to learn about exotic pets are the vets that they should visit. Is the veterinarian prepared to accommodate exotic animals? While many dog and cat hospitals see exotic animals, they often do so because they are the only place in the city. Many dog and cat hospitals will only treat an exotic pet when no one else will, and the pet is also really sick. You can really tell if a veterinary hospital is set up to treat exotic animals if they have some of the basic equipment and supplies needed to do so, such as scales that weigh in grams for weighing small exotic small animals or a tank to enclose them sure a reptile. If they do not have the equipment specifically designed to treat and examine typically smaller exotic patients, most likely they will not treat many of them. Are veterinarians or their assistants comfortable handling exotic patients? Knowing how to safely handle exotic pets is truly an art that has taken years to master. Most exotic animals are prey species that become stressed when they have restricted movements. No matter how good a veterinarian can be in medical care for exotic species, without a great technical team to comfortably support these animals, they will not be able to perform great medical care. Just by watching veterinary technicians or veterinarians restrict and manipulate your exotic pet, you can get an idea about how often they actually handle exotic animals. Technicians and veterinarians trained in restricting exotic pets should be relaxed and have a plan on how to collect and maintain your pet. Are veterinarians and/or veterinary staff members of any professional organization of exotic pets? There are several groups of exotic animal professionals, such as the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Association of Exotic Veterinarians of Mammals, and the Association of Veterinary Reptiles and Amphibians, to which many veterinarians who are interested in the care of exotic pets belong. These organizations provide education to veterinary professionals on an ongoing basis, and in general, people who want to remain informed in the care of exotic pets will join one or more of these groups to stay up to date. Veterinarians who belong to these groups usually show the logo of the organization on a label in their hospitals, window or printed in their hospitals. If a veterinarian has taken the time and money to join any of these organizations.
