Kids love days associated with gift-giving. Christmas usually rates high on a child’s list of favorite days at least in part because it often means a present. Your child’s birthday can be their favorite day of the year even without a tall stack of presents, however. If you take the time to make the child really feel that this is their personal holiday, it will be a day they to which they look forward with anticipation and on which they can look back with gratefulness. Birthdays should be the day on which each child feels uniquely loved and celebrated. What that looks like can vary from family to family or even culture to culture. Some things, however, translate well for all kids. 1. Make it Last All DayrnWhether you start their day with breakfast in bed or strew the breakfast table with confetti, the idea is that the day from start to finish is focused on them. Start the day with a spirit of celebration and keep it going all day long. Have every member of the family send Christian birthday cards so that the mailbox is jammed full of happy wishes in the afternoon. Let them choose their favorite foods for dinner in the evening and festoon the table with brightly colored balloons. 2. Tell the Child’s StoryrnMake the child’s birthday personal by telling the tale of THEM. Start with the joyful day they arrived and hit all the high points up to their current birthday. Include mentions of favorite friends, foods, music, books or movies and all the family stories where they have a starring role. The tale can be serious or full of smiles and laughter. Have far away relatives include anecdotes in their Christian birthday cards sent for the day. Pictures make a great addition. 3. Keep a Photographic RecordrnSpeaking of pictures, why not make it a birthday tradition to take a birthday photo every year? Traditions make events more memorable and somehow more special. You could have your child stand by a yardstick each year in the birthday photo or blowing out their birthday candles. Put the pictures in a special birthday album to be brought out once a year. It’s a nice idea to keep all your child’s Christian birthday cards on hand, too, so that they can re-read them in coming years. As you can see, you don’t have to spend a bundle to make a child’s birthday feel terrifically special and a day worth remembering. Kids like presents, but they will remember the feelings and traditions long after gifts are forgotten. And the words written in saved birthday cards will make them feel loved year after year.
