During Christmas everything seems a blur, so much shopping – so little time, so many people to visit – so many of them you don’t like! Every Christmas I see the same thing happen, people panic buy! I feel like standing in front of my local supermarket and screaming, “This shop will only be closed for one day, just the one!” A few days before Christmas everything seems to grind to a halt, sometimes made worse by bad weather. This year the snow closed an entire multi storey shopping centre down in North London and all offices seem to be manning “Skeleton staff”; does everyone and everything just switch off for a few days or even weeks? I was planning to head up to Scotland this year to visit some family I haven’t seen for a few decades. When booking my train ticket I realised the Christmas rush had driven train ticket prices up the roof, plus due to the snow disruption there was an even larger shortage of tickets. According to my calculations I would be paying almost double for my train ticket, and that’s only if I could get hold of one. I also considered driving up there, it’s a nine hour drive but I would have taken the scenic route, but apparently to hire a car during Christmas I would need to take out a personal loan! During November I hired a car for a few days, it cost me just over £100, for the same kind of car for the festive period I was looking at £290! I ended up not going at all and instead ended up watching telly on Christmas day and hitting the sales from Boxing day, I never knew car hire could be so expensive, for next year I’m going to book my train ticket early and maybe get in touch with a car hire in Scotland company to see if they do one way rentals, that way I can drive back on Boxing day.
