A niche is a simple synonym for specialisation. You can have a horizontal niche, a vertical niche or a combination of both.
Let's face it, the majority of coaches struggle choosing a niche because they want to keep their doors open to any potential client. Indeed, who wants to throw away potential income, right? However, there is a problem with this false logic.
Put yourself into your clients' shoes. Let's say you have problems with your eyes, would you go to your general practitioner or to an eye specialist? Probably, you would opt for the second, right? This is exactly what is happening with those potential clients who you are afraid that would never come in to your cage, should you specialise. But this is not the case. These clients will not come in to your cage exactly because you don't specialise.
But it is not only about them, this story is also about you. Put your hand on your heart and answer this question: would you be happy to coach just anyone or would you prefer coaching people on something you are passionate about? Probably the latter, am I right?
So let's have a look at the various arguments that speak for why we would want to have a coaching niche.
1. It clearly differentiates you from other coaches on the market.
2. As a consequence, it will be easier to create a targeted branding and marketing message to your ideal customers.
3. Due to your targeted experience in your field, you will be perceived as an expert, the go-to coach in your area. (Beware: with expert I don't mean expert in the coaching issues, but expert in coaching on those issues, that is a difference!)
4. Your expertise will bring you bigger authority status and will be more likely to receive publicity.
5. Publicity might bring along jou
alists, interviews and speaking engagements.
6. These might bring you even more publicity... and a bunch of new clients!
7. New clients will mean more money...
8. ... And also more new clients via word-of-mouth marketing and referrals.
9. As you are specialised for this one and only area, you can keep your focus and can keep yourself so much easier updated on latest industry trends and happenings in your niche.
10. Which means at the same time also being able to respond to those trends quickly (or set trends yourself) and change the course of your strategies if necessary.
11. Not to mention how much time you can save by re-packaging your expertise and re-using the same articles or compiling them into free reports, e-books or programs.
12. And of course, it is so much easier to find joint venture partners to promote your services or you promoting their services, complementary to those of yours.
13. And last but not least, how will you personally feel if you become an expert, tons of clients rush to work together with you, jou
alists knock on your door to ask for interviews, joint venture partners beg for promoting their products for commission and you have the money you dreamed of?

There's No Such Thing as Discount Talent
There is always a fear associated with bad economies. Companies instinctively look to slash budgets, and unfortunately, hiring is the first casualty. It starts out subtle. At first they trim the recruiting team. They will shrink it down to a virtual skeleton crew and put recruiting duties on regular HR folks. Then they look at advertising and recruiting partner programs. That is the next biggest expense they believe will save them dollars.
