It is quite common for women of child bearing age to suffer from an unpleasant condition called PMS or Pre-Menstrual Syndrome. Characterized by irritability, mood swings, bloating, tension etc, PMS can be every woman’s nightmare. While a number of remedies can alleviate some of the symptoms, Omega-3 fatty acids are known to work wonders to provide relief from these dreaded PMS symptoms. What better way to supplement your body with the goodness of Omega-3 rnFatty acids than cod liver oil? About Cod Liver Oil and Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as essential or polyunsaturated fatty acids, are required for good health and need to be obtained externally from fish; nuts, dietary supplementation etc. since your body cannot manufacture them internally. Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain normal cognitive functioning and help fight inflammation. Symptoms similar to some of those of PMS, including depression, mood swings, fatigue, cognitive problems and dry skin can be the result of lack of Omega-3 supplementation. Like fish oil supplements, cod liver oil is used to improve symptoms of depression, joint pain and anxiety; lower high cholesterol; and reduce blood pressure. The primary benefits of fish oil supplements like cod liver oil are their high content of Omega-3 fatty acids. Apart from this, cod liver oil also contains high amounts of Vitamins A and D which help in improving eyesight and immunity levels and strengthening bones and teeth respectively. PMS: Symptoms and Treatments PMS is a complex condition that can cause a wide variety of troublesome or even serious symptoms. Depending on your specific symptoms, your doctor may recommend antidepressants or anti-inflammatory medication to help control your symptoms. Cod liver oil and Omega-3 fatty acids may also offer some relief, although there’s not a lot of research to validate the claim that it works; however, in an article on the nutrition website, Nourishing Ecology, registered nurse and acupuncturist Leslie McGee says that cod liver oil can help normalize the menstrual cycle and eliminate certain symptoms of PMS.rnConsiderations While research has shown that cod liver oil helps in alleviating symptoms of PMS, do not attempt to self-treat your symptoms with dietary supplements. Certain medications can interact with cod liver oil and it is therefore best to consult your Doctor prior to taking these supplements.
