A patient who is diagnosed with panic attacks can try the cognitive-behavior therapy. This therapy combines a) cognitive therapy, which aims to change thought patterns connected to the symptoms experienced by the patient, and b) behavioral therapy, which targets a behavioral change on the part of the patient.
A weekly session between the patient and the therapist occurs at least one to 3 hours on a weekly basis. It is on these sessions that the therapy establish what specific feelings and thoughts that trigger panic attacks. A cognitive model of these attacks then describes these mental occurrences.
The goal of the therapist is to change the thought process of the patient. Instead of saying “I am sure to have a panic attack,” the patient is taught to substitute such thought with “It will pass. It is only just a momentary feeling.”
With cognitive-behavioral therapy, a patient knows how to control panic attacks. His sense of being helpless in his situation will be overcome by a more positive thought that everything is manageable and he can do something about his situation.
What is important is that the patient consult with his doctor on what is the best panic attacks treatment that fits him. Because at the end of the day, it is the patient's well being that is at stake here.
