We've been talking quite a bit over the last couple of months about colonic irrigation at La Spa – the benefits, what to expect and so on – and a lot of questions have cropped up about the treatment along the way.

So over the next couple of blogs we thought we’d address some of those questions – from the delicate details of what’s involved in a treatment to how colonics can help improve your health and vitality and even aid in weightloss, and those bigger questions like just who has colonics and why?

So,first things first…

What is a colonic irrigation?

Also known as colonic cleansing or colon hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation is the process of flushing impacted fecal matter and toxins from your colon with warm purified water, facilitating greater efficiency in the body’s eliminatory organs (lymph, lungs, kidneys and intestines). This process improves digestion and promotes overall wellbeing.

Why do people have a colonic cleanse?

The treatment is often praised for its effective treatment of ailments like irritable bowel, headache, backache, constipation, bloating, gas and even bad breath and body odour. As well as helping to relieve these conditions, many people report the cleanse helps with many other physical conditions and can also help with weight loss.

Is colonics just another fad?

Colon irrigation has been used as an alternative form of therapy for millenia. As early as 1500BC Egyptians used hollow reeds to induce water into the rectum as an enema. In the early 20th century John H Kellogg MD (he of the Cornflakes cereal empire) promoted the use of colonics with his patients. Today colonics is seeing a resurgence as people are taking greater responsibility for their own health and wellbeing and relying less on pharmaceutical medicines. The treatment is particularly popular amongst health-conscious celebs. Big Hollywood names like Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Britney Spears and Ben Affleck have all praised the cleansing and energising effects of a colon cleanse.

How can a colonics treatment improve my health and wellbeing?

Colonics improves your wellbeing by removing the impacted toxic waste that has built up in your colon over a lifetime. Years of fattening processed foods, sugary drinks and indigestible items block the natural flow of the colon, causing blockages and making us feel weak and sluggish. Colonics flush those blockages away and kickstarts your digestive system, getting it back to its fully-functioning best again.

Can colonics help me lose weight?

Although colonics is not primarily a weight loss treatment, it can help lose inches as part of a weightloss regime. Over a course of colonic hydrotherapy treatments many people find weight falling away due to improved colonic functioning and by naturally wanting to keep their colon in peak condition and eat more organic and healthy foods. For a deeper answer to this question check out our blog post on colon hydrotherapy and weight loss.

We hope part of this colonic irrigation FAQ answers some of your concerns about colonics.
