Why is camping and hiking such an excellent combination, especially for families with children from a certain age? This article has the details, including tips and advice here to make your trip pleasant and problem-free.

Fun Activities for the Whole Family

The secret to a memorable, fun camping trip is (1) finding a great location and (2) finding the right activities that will make all members of the family happy. If you find a location that has enough possibilities for interesting, playful walks, your children will be happy to go hiking with you.

Think of a location like the beach. What’s more interesting for young children then to hike along the beach, finding interesting things that the sea brought on the beach, fishing for crabs, seeing the tides change, and stopping now and then for a cup of hot chocolate? And, if the children have a great vacation, the parents usually do, too!

Many campsites cater to hikers and they often have set out trails for both beginners and experienced hikers. Some campsites are even located in or near designated hiking parks. Ask about this before you book a campsite.

Another advantage of hiking is that it is free (provided you already possess good hiking boots). If you are a family of five, paid activities can mean quite some expenses for you. But hiking through nature won’t cost you a dime.

Some Tips and Advice

For a successful, fun hiking trip there are some things to keep in mind:
If possible, book your trip early, as many establishments allow you to pick your own camping spot. If you are earlier than others, you will still have all the possible choices.

Think about the weather during the time you intend to go, and also think of how crowded your destination will be during that period. If you prefer to hike alone, then don’t go during public holidays, the Christmas season or any other period of time in which many people will be present at your destination. On the other hand, your children may welcome the presence of a lot of other children their age. Check with the campsite in advance.

Find out for yourself how long you, your partner and/or your children are willing and able to hike. Then check if the campsite(s) you are considering, have the right kind of hiking trails set out.

Plan everything well in advance, and think it through, and you may find that the camping and hiking combination is a winner for your family as well.
