Muay Thai is a combat sport originating from Thailand that uses stand-up striking as well as various clinching techniques. It is also known as "The Art of Eight Limbs" since Muay Thai fighters are capable of using both their shins, knees, elbows and fists to defend and deliver damage on their opponents. Unlike boxing, it allows for strikes below the beltline excluding the groin. It is very common to see low kicks, inner thigh kicks and leg sweeps result in throw downs of players in the ring.
Formal Muay Thai techniques are classified into two categories, major techniques and minor techniques. There are three techniques of Muay Thai as follows.
(1)Punching. Originally, the punch techniques in this combat sport were very limited as they are crosses and a long or lazy circular strike made with a straight arm and landing with the heel of the palm. Cross-fertilization with Western boxing and western martial arts displays a wide variety of western boxing punches that are now used, including lead jab, straight/cross, hook, uppercut, shovel and corkscrew punches and overhands as well as hammer fists and back fists.
(2)Elbow. The elbow may be used as a striking weapon in several ways, including horizontal, diagonal-upwards, diagonal-downwards, uppercut, downward, backward-spinning and flying. From another viewpoint, it can be used as both a finishing move and a way to cut the opponent's eyebrow so that blood might prevent him or her from seeing things clearly. Compared with the other forms, the diagonal elbows are faster but less powerful.
(3)Kicking. This kick is attached with the added risk of having the groin vulnerable once in a while that is against Karate and Tae Kwon Do ideology in general except for brief moments after a kick for instance. The roundhouse kick draws its power fully from the rotational movement of the body of the hips. Many people think that the fighters use a counter rotation of the arms to intensify the power of this kick. Actually, the power comes from the hips and the arms are put in a position to make them get out of the way.
Nowadays, Muay Thai has gained tremendous popularity all over the world. It is similar to other kickboxing systems in the Indochinese area, including pradal serey from Cambodia, tomoi from Malaysia, lethwei from Burma and muay Lao from Laos. Most people consider it to be one of the most effective stand-up fighting forms in and out of the ring.
